To Atkins or not to Atkins?

So I gained  a  few pounds since I stopped going to the gym late last year. Though I am still within normal limits for my height, I am dangerously standing on a thin line. Two or three more pounds and I will be officially overweight (again!).

I would like to attempt a low-carb diet. My family has been on brown rice for a couple of years now… But that is the only good thing going on with us diet-wise. We’re back to regularly consuming chips again. Bad, bad, bad! (And it’s mostly my bad!)

The last time I was on a low-carb diet was in 2007 when I started losing weight after giving birth to Nate. I quickly lost the pounds, but I was also religiously working out back then. I’d like to attempt that again. I am currently reading up on Atkins Diet at a low carb forum. Similar to the South Beach Diet, the Atkins Diet has a strict two-week induction period. During this time, I am not allowed to eat starchy, carb-laden food. The Atkins Diet says:

Eat absolutely no fruit, bread, pasta, grains, starchy vegetables or dairy products other than cheese, cream or butter. Do not eat nuts or seeds in the first two weeks. Foods that combine protein and carbohydrates, such as chickpeas, kidney beans and other legumes, are not permitted at this time.

I wonder if I can do this… Meanwhile, I think I should start reviewing our grocery list.

Still on family health… Hub told me last night during our after-dinner walk (and his after-dinner smoke, pfffft) that he and his friends are thinking of signing up for gym membership. That’s great, I say. But until he gives up smoking, all the efforts are just being negated. Though he isn’t into cigars (like Cohiba), hub smokes quite a lot! I don’t like the stink in his breath, clothes, hair, hands… I really hope going to the gym will help him quit. I am done telling him to quit – it doesn’t work. He will have to want it bad enough himself. I’m crossing my fingers.

  1. South Beach Diet is very effective for me. But to do it well I have to clean out the kitchen or I’ll never survive. At the grocery I completely avoid the chocolate lane so I don’t get tempted. Good luck!

  2. @Rone, hi there! The SBD did wonders for me too. Too much wonders, actually: I got pregnant with our second child teeehee 😀

@Badet – yun nga eh! LOL. I think I will not do Atkins. I remember it’s bad for me because I’ve had a history of kidney stones.
