So I came across this article that says mangoes can actually help in weight loss and lowering cholesterol levels. The African mango, also called Irvingia gabonensis, is apparently the up and coming plant in “natural” weight loss.
Say what? Summer time is just a few weeks away (if it hasn’t come yet – ang iniiiiiiit na lately!). And, in the Philippines, summer means mango season.
So I Googled to find out more about this plant that now intrigues me. Apparently, African mango is a misnomer because it isn’t actually mango. The Irvingia gabonensis tree bears these mango-like fruits. The tree is native to Africa, where the fruit and its seed (called dika nut) are widely consumed either by itself or as an ingredient in cooking.
It’s easy to confuse the African mango with the common mango. And there are a lot of herbal supplements that claim to contain African mango extracts. It now seems to me that the extract isn’t that easily available.
But is the weight loss claim true?
