Healthy Smoothies with fresh fruits and veggies

Helloooooooo, blog! I just wanted to share my latest fascination – healthy smoothies!

The summer went swooshing by and, before I know it, school’s about to start in less than a week! The summer was filled with activities for the kids – the girls had music classes, and Nate learned martial arts. In May, the girls resumed to their Chinese Character Canon lessons. In between were several family events and family-related tasks.

So there go my excuses for not updating my blog. 😀

Anyway, what I wanted to share today is my recent fascination with smoothies! I love smoothies. I make them everyday; I try as much as possible to include greens in them. And here’s what I also learned: I can lose weight, as much as 5 pounds in one week, by having healthy smoothies for dinner instead of a full meal.

I was inspired by this Facebook page – Incredible Smoothies by Tracy Russel. Her smoothies are awesome, and she lost weight by drinking green smoothies.

At first I was using my old blender, which wasn’t powerful enough so my smoothies would often have chunks.

On Mother’s Day, my thoughtful hub and kids surprised me with a better, more powerful Oster blender! So now I enjoy smoother, finer healthy smoothies.

I don’t intend (just yet) on going full vegetarian. But fresh fruit/veggie smoothie dinners seem like a good place to start eating healthier. Here are the smoothie dinners that I’ve been enjoying all summer, along with a few tips. 🙂

healthy smoothies fruits veggies

Wash your fruits and veggies thoroughly!

Before chopping fruits and veggies for smoothie making, I soak them in a DIY veggie and fruit wash:

Mix 1 cup white vinegar + 1 tbsp baking soda in a large bowl of water (approx. 2 liters). Soak the veggies and fruits for 10 minutes, then rinse them in cold water.

This step is important for veggies and fruits that we eat with the skin on. However, I would still peel fruits such as apples and pears (which are usually waxed before being sold in the market).

I spend about an hour every 2 days or so washing and chopping fruits and veggies for freezing and/or storage in the ref. Frozen fruits are amazing in smoothies because I don’t have to add ice anymore. Also, it’s so convenient to pop frozen fruits into the blender for a quick smoothie anytime of the day.

Getting back in shape

After taking a gym-break for… *counts fingers*… eight (!!!) friggin’ months, I realize I gained back almost all the pounds I lost in the past three years. Boo me.

But, as I always tell myself, it is never too late to start again.

So I am picking up from where I left off.

First things first: diet. I am doing away with rice for the whole month of May. It’s my fourth day today, and so far so good!

Next step: get back into the groove. It’s too hot for running these summer days. So I am thinking of getting a yoga mat and putting on some yoga pants for home workout like the circuit training I did a few weeks back.

Wish me luck, friends!

Gym break :(

I’ve been on gym break for almost 2 months now.

The original plan was to freeze my gym membership account and try if just running more regularly will work just as good, or even better. If it works out well, I was planning to terminate my gym membership and save about Php20,000 per year!

Unfortunately, even the best-laid plans fail. Mine wasn’t really laid out well, hehe. And so yes, I kinda set myself up for failure.

In short, I have yet to do a single run this month. Last month, I did two short runs. And that was it. *facepalm*

Anyway… I really hope I can go back to my fitness routine soon. The question “do diet pills work?” is out, because I am not going back to them. The good not-so-bad news, actually is that I gained back just a few pounds in the past 2 months. If I lost weight through diet pills, I’d have regained back all the lost pounds sooner. So that’s one consolation for me…

Uhh yeah right, stop rationalizing yourself. Go out and just do it.

Hayz, please wish me luck.

Surprised By The Scale (UPDATED!)

Usually, I weigh myself once a week. But ever since I gained over five whopping pounds (ssshh! Don’t tell anyone) during the Christmas season, I started ignoring the scale. Hmp!

Last Saturday, after taking a bath, I nonchalantly stepped on the little thing. With no expectations of course.

Why, I was surprised! I’ve lost five fabulous founds pounds! I am now back to my pre-Christmas weight. I am surprised because I don’t feel I have been working that hard on losing weight. Yes I go to the gym – three times a week at best. But due to my morning Mandarin classes, I often miss out on the cycling classes.

So what made the difference? No, it’s not some magical weight loss pills. It’s something I’ve been doing on the treadmill. I will blog about it in my fitness blog. 😉 The blog entry is now posted at my fitness blog, Project:Fit. go check it out!

Night-out with gym buddies @ Bellissimo Ristorante

Two weeks ago, I decided to join my gym buddies, who have been chiding me to go out with them for the longest time.

You might imagine gym buddies to be figure-conscious folks who eat like birds. But not these gym buddies. It’s no wonder why I’ve been having so much difficulty losing the last 5 pounds. I hang out with these guys after working out at the gym!

We went to Bellissimo Ristorante, a small Italian-inspired restaurant along Scout Castor Street, near the corner of Tomas Morato in Quezon City. It’s owned by actor Cesar Montano, whose paintings make the place a bit more interesting. (Unfortunately, he wasn’t there that night. *sad* )

Yep, the resto doubles as his gallery. The first time I ate here was with my bloggin’ Eat-Club girl friends. Continue reading Night-out with gym buddies @ Bellissimo Ristorante
