The last race I ran was probably six or seven years ago. At my age now (going 42 in a few months), I feel that I need to get back into some form of fitness routine. Then I got the email inviting me to join this year’s Mommy Milkshake Run. I felt that it will be perfect to ease me back into running.
Like most mommies, I try to give my kids yummy and nutritious school lunches most of the time. But my two girls are growing up, and their taste buds are becoming more discriminating – demanding could be a fitter term. They easily get bored with their school lunches so I need to vary the menu. So when I got invited to a cooking demo with Nadine Tengco, health guru and nutritionist, I couldn’t pass up.
Last week I watched Chef Bruce Lim whip up an easy but delish Asian Stir-fried pasta dish. A few weeks back, there was a Korean cooking demo at the girls’ school where I learned how to make Korean seafood rice roll and authentic Chap Chae (which I’ve yet to blog about, by the way).
So last Friday, I went to a cooking demo with Ms. Nadine Tengco on healthy lunch box recipes at SM North Edsa Active Fun.
Nadine Tengco, a US-certified nutritionist, is the fitness nutritionist of the TV show Pinoy Biggest Loser. She advocates eating – yes, eating – instead of reducing food intake to lose weight. (Hmmm, I like her a lot na!)
Friday’s cooking demo with Nadine Tengco was all about healthy school lunch boxes. Nadine showed us how to prepare healthy snacks that kids can bring to school and actually eat (not give away to classmates, hehe) using Soyami Chips.
Adding soya is an excellent way of improving the nutritional value of a meal. It helps to decrease fat and cholesterol, while increasing fiber content. Soyami Chips are MSG-free, GMO-free, transfat-free, and made from 100% soya. So adding Soyami to our kids’ school lunches is an easy and yummy way of making their meals more nutritious.

My two girls went back to school last Tuesday, while the little boy is still eagerly waiting for his classes to start next week. It’s that time of the year again for preparing healthy snacks for school kids.
One of the challenges I faced in the past when my girls were much younger (they are 9 and 13 now) is being picky with food. (This isn’t much of a problem with the little boy.)
In my attempt to provide healthy snacks, I’d prepare sandwiches that would, unfortunately, end up uneaten. That’s how picky there were. Thankfully, they have outgrown the picky-eater stage.
Nate, on the other hand, is not very picky with his food. But he has a lot of food allergies so it’s also difficult providing him nutritious snacks that won’t cause a skin flare-up.
Healthy Options recently sent me a couple of healthy snacks for school kids to try out.
Late July Classic Saltine Crackers (Php 149.00) are made from organic ingredients produced without synthetic fertilizers, chemical pesticides, and genetic engineering.
I find the crackers a bit salty (of course, they’re saltine). This can be balanced with a salsa dip, which makes it an even healthier snack.
Nate likes the crackers as they are though. Because it’s organic and preservative-free, I have no qualms giving the crackers to him.
Fried snacks loaded with transfats are obviously bad. So food manufacturers started baking them. But here’s something new – popped snacks.
So I gained a few pounds since I stopped going to the gym late last year. Though I am still within normal limits for my height, I am dangerously standing on a thin line. Two or three more pounds and I will be officially overweight (again!).
I would like to attempt a low-carb diet. My family has been on brown rice for a couple of years now… But that is the only good thing going on with us diet-wise. We’re back to regularly consuming chips again. Bad, bad, bad! (And it’s mostly my bad!)
The last time I was on a low-carb diet was in 2007 when I started losing weight after giving birth to Nate. I quickly lost the pounds, but I was also religiously working out back then. I’d like to attempt that again. I am currently reading up on Atkins Diet at a low carb forum. Similar to the South Beach Diet, the Atkins Diet has a strict two-week induction period. During this time, I am not allowed to eat starchy, carb-laden food. The Atkins Diet says:
Eat absolutely no fruit, bread, pasta, grains, starchy vegetables or dairy products other than cheese, cream or butter. Do not eat nuts or seeds in the first two weeks. Foods that combine protein and carbohydrates, such as chickpeas, kidney beans and other legumes, are not permitted at this time.
I wonder if I can do this… Meanwhile, I think I should start reviewing our grocery list.
Now I understand why many old couples sleep in different bedrooms when they reach a certain age. They can’t stand each other’s snores. For many, many years, they have probably endured each other quirks, and found them bearable. But to lose sleep because of someone else snoring – that is bad trip! Sleep apnea is no joking matter.
Imagine what happens when you lack sleep: you’re dizzy, sleepy, ergo, cranky all day.
Case in point: my parents. For the past 3 years (at least), they have been sleeping in separate bedrooms. Not because they can’t live with each other anymore (uhh, well, yeah, sometimes siguro, hehe), but because the other can’t sleep while one is snoring so loudly.
So now I see the future of our senior years: separate rooms. Grabe maghilik si hub. More often, I can’t sleep because I watch him as he goes into brief moments of apnea. I sometimes count 15, 20 seconds before he takes a very deep, almost gasping breath. At times, I have to shake him to make sure he wakes up to take the next breath.
